The words charming, delightful, splendid and fun come to mind when fans of THE BEST EXOTIC MARIGOLD HOTEL describe the movie. Get ready to reload those adjectives! We now have THE SECOND BEST EXOTIC MARIGOLD HOTEL on the big screen, with new and improved charm, delight, splendor and fun.
In this sequel, Sonny (Dev Patel) wants to buy another hotel, to grow the business. He travels with Muriel (Maggie Smith) on a long trip to California, where they meet with a potential investment partner. On the way to the meeting, the two ride the open roads in a convertible–top down, of course–and the movie has a very sweet start that allows us to celebrate the contrast of characters.
The contrast of characters is something I enjoyed throughout the movie with other returning veterans like Dame Judi Dench, Bill Nighy and Celia Imrie.
But this isn’t just the same people from the first party. Director John Madden surprises the seniors with new blood in the form of Richard Gere’s character, Guy Chambers.
While the dream of a second hotel swirls and Sonny is supposed to be focusing on his upcoming wedding, the rest of the characters are tackling a storyline that covers every delicious and difficult bit of life. There’s new love, divorce, friskiness, broken hearts, leaps of faith, sacrifice, old fashioned romance and, sadly, loss.
That’s plenty for you to prepare with. Embrace your life and treat yourself to the culture, comedy, colors and celebrations that make THE SECOND BEST EXOTIC MARIGOLD HOTEL a charming, delightful, splendid and fun film filled with juicy storylines.
